Supertram renewal works at Gleadless Townend tram stop

Works take place from Saturday 3 to Monday 5 May 2025

Essential works to improve your Supertram network will take place at Gleadless Townend tram stop (Saturday 3 to Monday 5 May inclusive).

During this time, Blue route services will operate between Malin Bridge and Sheffield Station. The Purple route will be suspended. Supertram replacement bus service BL1 will operate between Fitzalan Square and Halfway.

These works won’t affect other tram routes, with Yellow route and Tram Train services operating as normal.


Tram services in this area are expected to resume on Tuesday 6 May.

Blue route service icon

Blue route services

From Saturday 3 to Monday 5 May inclusive, Blue route services will operate between Malin Bridge and Sheffield Station only, at a normal frequency of up to every 12 minutes.

Supertram replacement bus service BL1 will connect to tram services at Fitzalan Square, and will serve affected stops between Fitzalan Square and Halfway.

Purple route services

From Saturday 3 to Monday 5 May inclusive, Purple route services will be suspended.

Most tram stops on the Purple route will be served by other tram routes or by the BL1 replacement bus service.

For journeys to Herdings/Leighton Road or Herdings Park, valid Supertram tickets will be accepted on First Bus services 47 and 48. These services depart from bus stop AG13 on Arundel Gate (the nearest tram stop is Castle Square).

Supertram replacement bus service

Supertram Replacement Bus

Throughout these works, Supertram Replacement Bus service BL1 will operate between Fitzalan Square and Halfway, providing a frequent and reliable replacement for tram services in this area:

  • Saturday: every 20 minutes in the early morning, every 12 minutes during the day, and every 30 minutes in the evening 
  • Sunday and Bank Holiday Monday: every 20 minutes in the early morning and during the day, and every 30 minutes in the evening

The BL1 replacement bus will not serve Herdings/Leighton Road or Herdings Park. Details about ticket acceptance on select local buses is available in the specific tram stop information for these stops in the section below.

Route

This service is limited stop, meaning it will only stop at bus stops which are located near to affected tram stops.

As part of a trial to provide improved facilities and better connection to Sheffield Train Station and city centre bus services, the replacement bus will now also call at Sheffield Interchange.

Due to planned roadworks on White Lane, replacement bus stop locations for the area will be different to normal. More information is available in the bus stop information section.

Tickets

Any valid tram ticket can be used for travel on the Supertram replacement bus service.

Purchase tickets using the TSY Mobile app, or from a conductor on your connecting tram service. Tickets are unable to be purchased from the bus driver.

The majority of the Supertram network will remain open. Information about affected tram stops, replacement bus stop locations, and bus stop facilities and accessibility, is available in the sections below.

At Crystal Peaks Interchange, the replacement bus will continue to directly serve the bus station and shopping centre. This follows a successful trial of these calling points during the recent renewal works at Birley Lane. Thank you to the customers who shared their feedback about this trial.

Changes to local transport

These renewal works at Gleadless Townend tram stop are within the tram stop boundary, so we do not anticipate any disruption to local roads or bus services as a result of our works.

All pedestrian crossings at Gleadless Townend tram stop will remain open throughout these works.

Car iconRoads

We're working with Sheffield City Council to enable roadworks on White Lane while trams are not operating, to help avoid further disruption to the area in the future.

These roadworks are likely to cause delays in the area. Signposted diversions will be in place.

Park and Ride

All Travel South Yorkshire Park and Ride sites will remain open during these works, offering free parking as usual.

Walking, Wheeling and Cycling
It may be quicker and more convenient to walk, wheel or cycle part of your journey to connect to services at a different stop.

Free cycle parking is available at Halfway Park and Ride, and for customers of Crystal Peaks shopping centre there is also cycle parking available. In addition there is free cycle parking at Sheffield Interchange.

  • Spring Lane to Manor Top: 17 minutes (1,100 metres)
  • Manor Top to Hollinsend: 12 minutes (900 metres)
  • Hollinsend to Gleadless Townend: 12 minutes (750 metres)
  • Gleadless Townend to White Lane: 8 minutes (600 metres)
  • Gleadless Townend to Herdings/Leighton Road: 9 minutes (650 metres)

It should be noted that during these works, Supertram tickets will only be accepted on First Bus services 47 and 48 between Sheffield city centre and Herdings Park. Supertram tickets will not be accepted on any other local bus services.
