In 2018, Northern Railways, TransPennine Express, SYPTE( now SYMCA ), Association of Community Rail Partnerships (Community Rail Network), the FoDaTS and High Peak & Hope Valley Community Rail Partnership joined together to fund the design and installation of a bespoke Victorian-style canopy, reminiscent of the original features of the station which opened in 1872.

After considerable planning and preparation, work on the canopy was completed in May 2019, providing shelter and perch seating for waiting passengers, as well as cover for ticket machine users. It was officially unveiled by Mayor of South Yorkshire, Dan Jarvis in July 2019 to coincide with the 125th anniversary of passenger services calling along the Hope Valley Line.
