Travel advice for Tramlines Festival - Friday 26 to Sunday 28 July 2024

Tramlines festival will be taking part over the weekend of Friday 26, Saturday 27 and Sunday 28 July, at Hillsborough Park. Festival goers are encouraged to plan before they travel to the event and to use available public transport services as there are no parking facilities available near the venue.

Travelling to and from the event by public transport

Hillsborough Park is well connected to the city centre by bus and tram services, making travelling by public transport the most convenient way to get to and from the festival.

Travelling by tram

A normal tram service is planned to continue to run throughout the day until the evening on Friday 26, Saturday 27 and Sunday 28 July so people can travel to the venue and others can make their journeys as normal.

To get to the main stages in Hillsborough Park, festival goers can catch the Yellow Route service to Hillsborough Park or Leppings Lane tram stop, or the Blue Route service to Hillsborough tram stop, which is a five-minute walk to the park.

Festival goers wanting to travel home via tram will be directed out of the park via the exit at Parkside Road to board the tram at the Leppings Lane tram stop. No other tram stops will be served.

A revised service will operate on Friday 26 July and Saturday 27 July – from approx. 21:30 to 22:30 and Sunday 28 July – from approx. 20:30 to 22:00, to provide trams after the festival from Leppings Lane into the city centre. The latest information over the festival weekend is available at travelsouthyorkshire.com/tramlines-2024.

Network improvement works

Network improvements are taking place on the Supertram network over the Tramlines weekend affecting Blue Route services between White Lane and Crystal Peaks. A revised service will be running and a rail replacement bus service will be operating to help people make their journeys. Customers should visit travelsouthyorkshire.com/NetworkImprovements to find out more.

Travelling by bus

Information regarding bus services available to travel to the event can be found by using our journey planner at journeyplanner.travelsouthyorkshire.com/ or other journey planning tools.

For security reasons, the two bus stops on Penistone Road - Penistone Road/Parkside Road Stop ID: 37020481 and Penistone Road/Beulah Road Stop ID: 37020475 (near Hillsborough Park/Hillsborough Leisure Centre) – will be suspended at all times over the festival weekend. A customer information notice will be posted on the affected stops in advance of the closure.

A number of bus stops around the festival may also be temporarily suspended after the event ends each evening for safety reasons due to the high volumes of pedestrians.

Customers are advised to keep checking our disruptions page for the most up to date information. Further information will be provided as plans are finalised.

The latest bus timetables and Journey Planning Tools are available at travelsouthyorkshire.com.

Travelling from outside Sheffield

For those coming from out of Sheffield, the best option is to use the train and then board a Blue Route tram from Sheffield railway station. Anyone travelling from Rotherham can also use the Tram Train service to Sheffield city centre and change to either the Yellow or Blue Route tram service at the Cathedral tram stop.

Alternatively, if travelling by car, there are Park & Ride facilities at nearby Malin Bridge and Middlewood with tram and bus connections to the venue. Further information about Park & Ride sites is available at travelsouthyorkshire.com/en-gb/populardestinations/sheffield-park-and-ride.

Further information and planning ahead

The festival finishes at 22:30 on Friday and Saturday and 21:30 on Sunday. Trams, buses and taxis will be available to take people home.

Buses and trams are expected to be busier than normal over the weekend, and journeys may take longer than usual. We are therefore reminding people attending Tramlines or wishing to travel in the area, to plan ahead using our online journey planner tool and prepare for longer journey times. They are also advised to purchase tickets in advance, allow extra time and check before they travel at travelsouthyorkshire.com/disruptions.aspx for the latest travel information.

As well as on our dedicated page at travelsouthyorkshire.com/tramlines-2024, further information is available: Please note that there may be some localised road closures to help people leave the area safely.  This may mean that some local bus services could be diverted.  Where possible, all affected bus stops will have diversion notices posted on them advising of the nearest available bus stop.
