Silkstone Common Pallet Planters

Creative station adopters, the CARE group, have brought colour and character to their narrow platform by upcycling old unwanted pallets into unique vertical planters.

After designing, making (by manoeuvring slats, adding breathable membrane lined in plastic and then staining blue to match Northern’s branding) and filling them with greenery the group introduced the four handcrafted planters to the station in 2020.

Station users and train crew have noticed how these vibrant and interesting pallet displays have helped enhance the station environment with the group receiving lots of positive feedback, even getting shortlisted for the Community Rail Awards 2021, along with four other national projects, in the Small Projects Award category.

About the station group

Community Action in Rural Environments (CARE) is a group of volunteers who donate their time to improve the environment in Silkstone and Silkstone Common. Presented with the Queens Award for Voluntary Service in 2018, they are always looking for new ways to make their villages a better place to live.

They were supported on this project by the Penistone Line Partnership, Northern Railways and South Yorkshire MCA.

If you would like more information on the CARE group, creating your own station pallet planters or adopting your local station please email Community Rail Officer Cathrine Ashworth
