Zero Fare Pass 

A Zero Fare Pass provides free travel within South Yorkshire between home and school.

You will need to apply to your local council to check if you qualify for the pass.

  • If your child is between 5 and 16, lives in South Yorkshire, and travels over three miles from home to get to school, he or she may qualify for a Zero Fare Pass, paid for by your local council.
     
  • If your child is under eight years old and has to travel over two miles from home to get to school, he or she may also qualify for a Zero Fare Pass.

How to apply

To check if you qualify please contact your local council, details are on our Zero Fare Pass - Local Council Contacts page.

A Zero Fare Pass is valid for free travel Mondays to Fridays until 7pm on the days when your school is open (term time only).

If the school is outside South Yorkshire, the pass will only be valid as far as the county boundary.

If you have checked with your local council and you don't qualify then you can purchase a pass privately through SYPTE.

Applications submitted to the local council by 30 June 2020 will be processed and sent to home addresses during August in time for the start of term in September. 


Lost passes

If your child has lost his or her pass, you can order a replacement:

  • By phone using your credit or debit card (0114 221 1419)*
  • By cheque or postal order (made payable to SYPTE)**

All replacements cost £7.00 and will be posted to your home address by First Class post.

*Due to the Coronavirus situation 0114 221 1419 is not currently being monitored.  If you have any queries relating to Zero Fare Passes please contact us at zerofares@sypte.co.uk.

**Cheques should be sent to the following address: Zero Fares, South Yorskhire Passenger Transport Executive, 11 Broad Street West, Sheffield, S1 2BQ.  You should also include a note stating your child's name, address and school they are attending.

The code of conduct is a condition of use for a Zero Fare Pass. Non-compliance with this code may result in the withdrawal of the pass and payment of the full adult fare.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q. Can the Zero Fare passes be used on the green school buses like the MegaTravel can?

A. Yes, the Zero Fare Pass is valid on any bus as long as it's a school day, and the young person is travelling between the boarding point and the school shown on the pass.

Q. How do I know if I qualify for a pass?

A. Contact your local council to apply for a pass.

Q. The local council has said that I don't qualify for a pass funded by them.  Can I buy one?

A. Yes, please visit the Zero Fare Pass - Private Purchase page for details.

Q. My child is going on work experience, can they still use their zero fare pass ?

A. Extension cards are available from your school.  For permanent changes (eg change of address) please contact your local council.
