Covid-19 information for public transport customers

 

For over 40 years, South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive has encouraged the use of buses, trams and trains across the communities we serve. Today, during these exceptional times, I’m asking the people of South Yorkshire to avoid public transport, where possible, to play their part in the region’s road to recovery from coronavirus. 

 

While our public transport network continues to run – allowing the region’s NHS and key workers, and people who can’t work from home, to make essential journeys – our priority is the safety of our customers and our staff. We need everyone to do their bit to help people who need to use our services, where there is no alternative option, to stay safe. We have overcome challenges before by supporting each other and working together with the communities we serve. 

 

As coronavirus restrictions ease through the Government’s roadmap, there will need to be changes to the way people travel. National social distancing requirements mean South Yorkshire’s buses, trams and trains can’t run as normal – they can only carry a fraction of the number of people they would have before the pandemic. 

 

Together, we must all do what we can to contain coronavirus and continue to follow the guidelines. We’re asking you not to travel unless you have to, stay local if you can and walk or cycle where possible. If you need to use public transport, aim to wear a face covering and keep a safe distance. Consider if your journey is necessary before you travel, avoid peak times and think about the routes and ways you travel, so that everyone has more space to stay safe.

 

The entire SYPTE team – across our Interchanges, infrastructure and support services – is working tirelessly with public transport operators to help our customers who need to travel. We’d like to say a huge thank you to our colleagues and partners for their dedication, and to you, our customers, for your patience as we fight this pandemic. 

 

We know your journey may take longer than normal and some routes may be busier than usual due to social distancing measures and previous changes to timetables. We’re listening to customer feedback and monitoring travel patterns to make service changes where they’re needed to help customers making essential journeys to social distance.

 

We want to reassure those of you who need to travel that, collectively, we’re doing all we can to keep our customers and our team safe. Find out more about how we’re responding to coronavirus.
