The Education & Safety Team work with schools, local authorities, public transport operators and South Yorkshire Police to promote safety and good behaviour on public transport across South Yorkshire.
Working in Primary Schools
- Give pupils the chance to experience public transport for the first time and provide travel training to help children to use the buses, trams and trains safely
- Provide resources for schools to work on travel issues such as reading timetables and promoting the environmental benefits of public transport
- Give children the opportunity to apply for a Megatravel Pass to allow them to travel for the concessionary fare
- Support school trips where public transport is used, assisting with planning the public transport journeys required, offer guided tours of South Yorkshire's Interchanges
- The team support a bus safety scenario at Crucial Crew which is a ’flagship’ educational program, offered to all Year 6 school children in South Yorkshire
Working in Secondary Schools
- Deliver PHSE lessons which reinforce the safe travel message and help reduced anti-social behaviour on public transport.
- Work alongside careers teachers to provide work experience travel options and travel advice for pupils when they finish school to go into further education or employment
- We have an agreed reporting system in place with partners (operators, schools, local authorities, south yorkshire police) in which incidents occurring involving school children can be reported and acted upon
- Targeted interventions such as assemblies in response to incident reports or customer comments.
