If your child is aged 11-16 and lives in South Yorkshire, they need a MegaTravel Card. The card is free and qualifies the holder for cheaper fares throughout South Yorkshire at any time:
For more information on how to apply for a MegaTravel Card, pick up a leaflet from any Travel South Yorkshire information centre or download an application form here. (PDF)
For details of this scheme please contact Barnsley Council on 01226 775656 or visit the website at www.barnsley.gov.uk/micard.
From August 2012, young people up to the age of 18 who live in Barnsley will no longer be entitled to free bus travel within the borough. Under the new arrangements, there will now be a 30 pence fare for every bus journey you make within Barnsley or between Barnsley and the rest of South Yorkshire. However, time restrictions that previously applied to the use of the card have now been lifted, which means that the card can be used at any time and every day, including weekends. Please see the Barnsley Council website for more details.
A Mobility Pass entitles disabled people to free travel on all buses, trams and local trains in South Yorkshire. It can also be used on some cross-boundary services and at any time except for late night services. To find out if you are entitled to a Mobility Pass you can obtain a leaflet from any Travel South Yorkshire Information Centre or visit the Travel South Yorkshire website. Alternatively, you can contact your local authority on the numbers below:
A Zero Fare Pass provides free travel within South Yorkshire between home and school. The passes are valid for use between September and July, Monday to Friday until 7pm on the days when your child’s school is open.
Local Authorities may provide free Zero Fare Passes for pupils travelling more than 3 miles from home to school (or more than 2 miles for pupils under 8 years old) and attend their catchment school or nearest appropriate school. To find out if your child is entitled to free travel to and from school, please contact your Local Authority:
Entitlement may differ depending on which district you live in. If your child doesn’t qualify for a free Zero Fare Pass, you can still purchase a pass for the academic year. Prices are based on the current concessionary fare and vary on age, residency and number of buses used for the home/school journey. For more information, and to find out about ticket costs, call 0114 221 1419 or email email@example.com. You can also see additional information on the Zero Fare Pass page on the Travel South Yorkshire website.
